Bellas Artes Outpost present: Fairest of the Fair

Event Admin: Mynila’s Choice

Bellas Artes Outpost, Chino Roces Avenue, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines

06:00 PM

“Fairest of the Fair” departs from looking at the production of mass media images and early 20th century photography of annual beauty pageantries produced by the American colonial government in the Philippines, which took place at the Carnival of Manila (later Philippines Exposition), presented as a national "world's" fair of arts and industry with pavilions and beauty queens representing each region across the country. The event deeply marked a new Filipino society of the time and the development of consumption, capitalism, internal market diversity (implemented by American entrepreneurship) during the Commonwealth period.

The exhibition primarily gathers different manifestations of pageantry and its connection to the fantasy of monarchy that can be traced in the psyche of Filipino society across time: from Ergun’s in-depth investigation at today's vast Filipino migrant domestic workers around the world who perform beauty pageants as escapist entertainment from their social condition to Abad and Wadsworth Jones's virtual renders of Russian imperial tiaras owned by Imelda Marcos and confiscated at the conclusion of the Marcos regime
